Division Controller

Hobart Brothers LLC is an industry leading manufacturer of industrial filler metal products. Primary industry targets are varied but in general follow significant steel fabrication and manufacturing.   The business is headquartered in Troy, OH with three manufacturing operations facilities in southwest Ohio, and one in Traverse City, Michigan. The business was acquired by ITW in 1996 and operates as part of the Industrial Systems Platform in the Welding Segment.

The Filler Metal Division develops and manufactures tubular, solid and aluminum welding wires and coated electrodes for distribution in North America and around the globe.

Position Summary

The Division Controller is responsible for all aspects of the Finance function on a global basis.  This is a substantial global division and leading developer/producer of consumable products within the ITW Welding Portfolio.  As a key member of the leadership team, the Division Controller will assume a strategic role in the overall management of the company. The Controller will have primary day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, managing and controlling all financial-related activities of the division. This will include direct responsibility for accounting, finance, forward looking financial outlooks, strategic planning, legal, contract management, and acquisition analysis and negotiation support.

The Controller will have financial responsibilities involving financial audit/oversight of the Filler Metal businesses.   A critical component will be providing interpretive strategic financial support to the VP/GM and above.


  • Works in concert with the VP/GM and leadership team to refine, develop and execute the 80/20 strategic direction of the business
  • Demonstrates sound business judgment and actively contributes to the financial and strategic direction of the business with the leadership team.
  • Able to quickly assimilate external information (e.g. market drivers, macroeconomic conditions, etc.) to anticipate its impact across all aspects of the business.
  • Demonstrates the ability to look ahead and anticipate future trends - not only report results but predict/foresee future results.
  • Evaluates investment opportunities through the use of various financial tools (e.g. acquisitions, capital expenditures, restructurings).
  • Partner to VP/GM and Platform Controller on business issues “viewed as the right-hand person”.
  • Demonstrates solid understanding and ensures compliance with US GAAP/company policies and procedures.  Manages policies and processes effectively to ensure accuracy and integrity of the financial data. 
  • Analytical and inquisitive – able to explain the story behind the numbers and discern when something does not make sense. Comes with alternative solutions when presenting a problem.
  • Manages and develops a diverse and high performing team.
  • Helps people in the business understand how their choices and decisions will impact the financials.  Identifies, communicates, and trains others on key business levers and drivers.
  • Presents an objective opinion as input for business decisions based on facts, data and analysis.
  • Must have a distinct ability to effectively communicate different points of view (“devil’s advocate”) across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong communication skills and leadership presence when presenting to platform and segment level leadership.
  • Effective Project Management and mastery of the ITW Toolbox
    • Demonstrates effective project/change management skills.
    • Must eagerly learn, understand and become proficient with the ITW toolbox and be able to assess effectiveness across the Division.
  • Provides complete financial leadership for the division

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A 4-Year Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Master’s degree and CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years broad financial experience, including prior responsibility for a full business with consolidations and financial systems responsibilities.
    • Proven results in managing and developing talent.
    • Strong track record of driving financial improvements to support the business strategy.
    • Proven track record of leadership and collaboration skills, demonstrating a positive attitude, personal accountability, coaching skills, effective listening skills, and approachability.
    • Ability to resolve issues/conflicts in timely manner.
    • Proven ability to apply ITW principles in a financial environment.
    • Aggressive self-starter who is able to function under minimal supervision.

Strong computer, oral and written communication skills is required (Word and Excel).
