The Story

Continual Lowering of ACGIH TLV® for Manganese

Background

Over the years, regulatory bodies including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the American Council of Government Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) have enacted stricter regulations and recommendations for the Threshold Limit Values (TLV®s) of manganese in weld fume (see timeline for ACGIH recommendations above). Currently OSHA has a permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 5mg/m3 manganese fume, while the ACGIH has reduced its recommended TLV® for Manganese from .2 mg/m3 to .1 mg/m3 for inhalable particulate and .02 mg/m3 for respirable particulate. These latter recommendations reflect an ongoing trend toward stricter regulations – levels have consistently lowered since 1970. Certain states have endorsed even more stringent regulations.
