Patented Technology Reduces Silicon Island Formation and Facilitates Easier Cleanup

TROY, Ohio. January 8, 2005 - Hobart Brothers recently received a patent for the technology of their Tri-Mark® Metalloy® Vantage and Metalloy Vantage Ni1 gas shielded metal cored wires. The wires’ patented formula reduces silicon island formation and produces weld bead toe lines that are almost completely free of silicon deposits.
On carbon steel applications, the Metalloy Vantage wire is ideal for the railcar, automotive and general fabrication industries when single- and multi-pass welding. The Ni1 wire is well suited for welding nickel-molybdenum steels. The Ni1 applications include welding jobs that require toughness when joining HSLA weathering steels in structural construction applications where color match is not required. In fact, Hobart Brothers’ product manager, Tim Hensley, notes that the Ni1 was designed particularly for the structural steel market and manufacturers of large light and electric transmission poles.

Patented Formula Reduces Cleanup Cost

With their patented technology, both of the Metalloy Vantage wires provide weld bead faces and toe lines that are virtually free of silicon island deposits while allowing any silicon islands that do remain to be almost self-peeling. Together with low spatter rates, both of the Metalloy Vantage wires save time and money by eliminating the need to clean prior to painting, coating or plating. Hensley explains, “While you’ll find very few silicon deposits using the Metalloy Vantage wires, what little deposits do form are on the center of the beads, rather than the toes. That’s a huge advantage in terms of reducing your labor cost and cleaning time on any application.”

Improved Performance

Available in a wide variety of packages and diameters, the Metalloy Vantage wires offer several advantages over solid wire. These advantages include improved wetting action, gap bridging and side wall fusion. Further, both wires provide increased travel speeds and higher deposition rates to help increase throughput time. The Metalloy Vantage wires are recommended for single- and multi-pass welding in flat and horizontal positions using a shielding gas mixture of CO2 with a minimum of 75 percent and a maximum of 95 percent Argon. The richer Argon improves arc characteristics and decreases spatter and fumes on thinner gauge metals, while the lesser Argon mixture will provide deeper penetration for thicker steel applications.
