New McKay ArmorWear Wire Resists Impact and Abrasion
TROY, Ohio. January 6, 2005 - To improve resistance against adhesive (metal-to-metal) wear, abrasion and impact, Hobart Brothers introduces McKay® ArmorWear® open arc, or self-shielded, flux cored hard surfacing wire. As an overlay for carbon and low alloy steels on farming, mining and quarry implements, ArmorWear deposits a premium martensitic alloy steel of H-12 tool steel composition and maintains its hardness up to 1000 degrees F. ArmorWear has a steady arc and smooth spray transfer and is best suited for flat and horizontal hard surfacing. As deposited on 1020 steel, the wire has a hardness ranging from 47 Rc to 53 Rc for one to three layers.
Ideal for Smaller Power Sources
Hobart Brothers designed the McKay ArmorWear wire to optimize performance on 110/220 V type wire welding machines using DCEN (straight) polarity, a feature that Hobart Brothers’ product manager Jennifer Monnin sees as a distinct benefit. “Even though most of the time people run hardfacing on DCEP (reverse) polarity, we found that the ArmorWear wire performs even better with DCEN. That’s a big advantage considering that many of the smaller machines are set up for straight polarity or may not have the ability to run on reverse. It makes the wire easier and more versatile to use,” she explains.
ArmorWear is available in .035-in. diameter wire on 10-lb. spools, making it ideal for use with the smaller machines and more convenient for a wide variety of hard surfacing needs.
Impact, Abrasion and Cost Reduction
For equipment subject to ongoing abrasion and impact, the ArmorWear wire offers excellent resistance while lengthening the life of the parts and preventing excessive wear. The wire is well suited for equipment applications such as bucket lips and teeth, cultivator chisels and sweeps or spindle and pump components. In terms of cost, Monnin sites the strength and versatility of the ArmorWear wire as a viable alternative to replacing equipment. She explains, “With ArmorWear, you can hardface a worn part to new condition for about 20 to 30 percent less than the cost of a replacement part. The hardfacing is not only going to prolong equipment life, but it’s also going to reduce your downtime due to equipment restoration.” The ArmorWear wire can further reduce costs by lessening the need to maintain an inventory of spare parts; broken or worn equipment can simply be rebuilt.
